Designing Projects to Change the World

Hack4Impact? What's that?

Hack4Impact exists for both nonprofits and students. We connect student software developers with nonprofits and socially responsible organizations to develop powerful new tools for social change to help further their mission. We are committed to increasing awareness of technology's potential for good through talks and workshops.

With the rapid advancement of technology comes the onset of techno solutionism, the belief that just about any problem in the world can be solved using technology. But is that really the case? Far too often, products of techno solutionism end up becoming creations that, while technically impressive, fail to solve real problems at hand, which defeats the purpose of them altogether. But at Hack4Impact, we believe in using tech for good.

In today's world, we are capable of changing the lives of those halfway across the country. While tech has enabled us to have a larger reach, we also understand that we have a responsibility to build tools that are more than just pet projects. We strive to deliver incredible value to the nonprofits we are fortunate enough to work with and look forward to seeing our products continue to be used for years to come.

Our Design Process

Each semester, we work with non-profits with the opportunity to build a great product that solves a core need, generally in relation to their mission statements. We work in small groups led by a product manager and technical lead to scope and develop the application, taking into account our clients’ requirements and suggestions, and making the most of our technical, design, and business skills to create a product that can be used for social good.

Let's Talk DEI.

The mission of our Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee is to address the critical issue of underrepresentation in the tech industry and the broader workforce. By contributing to our initiative, you are supporting events and activities aimed at raising awareness about the effects that arise from the absence of proper diversity, equity, and inclusion practices within these spaces.

In the past, we have partnered with various organizations to facilitate informative panel discussions. These events create a safe and welcoming environment for individuals to hear and learn from the experiences of those in the tech industry who belong to underrepresented groups. Our goal is to continue building upon these efforts to establish safe, educational spaces that are accessible to all, whether they are on or off-campus.

Our belief is that even the smallest seed of awareness can bring about positive disruption in the current landscape of underrepresentation. By fostering understanding and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, we aim to lay the foundation for more inclusive industries in the future. Our hope is that these incremental changes will gradually create a "domino effect," ultimately leading to a society where individuals of all backgrounds can collaborate and bridge the significant gaps we face today. Your support will help us make this vision a reality, one step at a time.
