International Development: Experience India

In today’s World it is imperative that everyone makes an attempt to understand the rich array of cultures and people that populate the planet.

In order to feed all the people by 2050 humans must learn to work together synergistically. It is vital that our young students get the opportunity, first hand to see for themselves how others live and survive in other cultures and countries and fully understand their needs and think of ways to get the poor out of poverty. This can be covered in the classroom, but this is no substitute for seeing first hand the issues in the field.

These short trips overseas enable students to get a glimpse of what it is like in developing countries so they better understand how they will be able to assist in the future on issues such as food security and a better livelihood for developing country families. This trip to India is also enhanced by the presence of Indian students who also participate in the trip and share their knowledge with Cornell students.

A wide array of institutions, villages, projects, agriculture, farmers, and cultural and social issues will be explored while traveling in Southern India during the 2 week trip in India. The students will then reflect on what they have seen and learnt during classes on their return.

More than 500 students and faculty have been able to take this Indian trip since it started in 2000. A thousand more have taken a similar trip in Latin America since they started in 1968. However, as costs rise for travel and lodging these days, many students find they cannot afford this valuable experience.

We are requesting your help and donation to make it possible for any student to partake in this life changing experience.
