The Africana Studies & Research Center seeks funding for the research and development of an interactive map of sites and landmarks of interest to Africana studies and African American history on the Cornell campus and in the Ithaca community. A walking tour fosters a greater understanding of the history and culture of the people of African descent and the Africana experience in upstate New York area. The walking tour will include informative material on sites such as the Africana Center's original location and current location, Wari House, Ujamaa Residential College, Willard Straight Hall, Alpha Phi Alpha memorial site, St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Sage Chapel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in 1961, and much more.
This mapping project creates a space to look back and celebrate the history of people of the African diaspora at Cornell. The interactive map will provide the basis for an "Africana Studies" walking tour of the campus and Ithaca area that can also be used for instructional purposes, the recruitment of students during visits to campus, and community outreach.
The development of the Africana Walking Tour interactive map will include support and direction by Founding Director of the Africana Studies & Research Center James Turner, Current Director W.E.B. Du Bois Professor Kevin Gaines and previous Center Directors to include Professor Robert L. Harris, Jr., Professor Locksley Edmondson, Professor Noliwe Rooks, Professor Salah M. Hassan, and Professor Gerard Aching. This project is also supported by Dr. Renee T. Alexander, Associate Dean of Students/ Senior Advisor to the Dean and Africana librarian Eric Acree.
