Emerging Markets Institute Club

Our Team and Impact:
We bring together students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds who share a common goal: to learn, analyze, and exchange ideas about emerging markets. Our members represent over 25 different majors, many of the most relevant emerging markets, and 6 of Cornell’s undergraduate schools. Our focus is on learning, collaboration, and community.
Over 25% of S&P 500 company revenues come from emerging markets, which may be surprising from an index made primarily of U.S. and other developed country equities. At EMIC, our goal is not only to help our members learn about emerging markets, but also to raise awareness within the Cornell community of the importance of emerging markets. Emerging markets are central to the future of global growth. Understanding them means understanding global opportunity, innovation, and policy challenges, which is essentially for anyone who wants to think about finance, business or investing on a global scale.
Our Work:
EMIC is the only economics club focused on emerging economies. Founded 4 years ago, we are a rapidly growing club with over 50 members. Our mission is to educate and connect students interested in emerging economies through learning, discussion, and collaboration on global issues.

Thomas Riveros broke down Bolivian inflation into two components: cyclical inflation (demand driven) and acyclical inflation (supply driven) within his broader research project
In prior years, we have been research-focused and students have addressed economic, social, and policy questions in formal, full-length research papers. This year, we launched two new initiatives. Our first new project promotes discussion of emerging markets research, policy, and economic phenomena through an online blog and organized on-campus events. As a research focused club, we use our funds on database subscriptions such as FDI Markets, and sources like Bloomberg Business News to conduct our research and write our online articles. We also fund our public campus events and travel to present our research at the EMI conference, where we have the opportunity to learn about research conducted by students outside Cornell, introduce the club, and hear from leading experts about the state of emerging markets. Last year, we connected with Ivan Duque (president of Colombia), Mark Mobius (emerging markets investor), and several Corning executives.
This semester has been one of growth and innovation — we’ve launched 2 major new projects, expanded our reach, and most importantly, we’ve made remarkable progress engaging the Cornell community and sparking new student interest in emerging markets. We’d love your support as we keep pushing forward and growing.
