Support Steel Bridge!

What we do:

We’re a team of passionate Cornell students designing, fabricating, welding, and constructing a 20+ foot steel bridge from scratch to compete in the national AISC Steel Bridge Competition. Every weld, bolt, and beam is student-built, combining technical skills learned in the classroom with real-world experiences. Your donation helps us purchase materials, construct the bridge, and enables the entire team to travel to the competition where we proudly represent Cornell. With your support, we can continue to push the limits of engineering applications while strengthening our teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills one bridge at a time.

Our team is composed of five subteams: design, fabrication, welding, construction, and business. In the fall, we focus on designing the bridge, then transition to construction during the winter and spring.

Meet our subteams:

Design:

  • Selects safe section sizes, efficient connections, and optimal member sizes
  • Performs structural analysis using MASTAN2 and Autodesk Fusion 360
  • Ensures the bridge can withstand all specified load cases without failure

Fabrication:

  • Machines all bridge pieces for welding using tools like mills, bandsaws, and lathes
  • Trains new members on fabrication techniques during the fall semester
  • Produces and prepares bridge pieces for assembly in the spring semester

Welding:

  • Welds fabricated bridge pieces together using MIG welding
  • Uses tools like calipers, clamps, and magnets to ensure precise welds
  • Focuses on creating the strongest, most durable bridge

Construction:

  • Practices assembling the bridge according to competition guidelines
  • Optimizes methods, team roles, and tools to minimize build time
  • Focuses on speed and efficiency, which are critical for competition scoring

Business:

  • Manages corporate sponsorships and fundraising efforts, including Giving Day
  • Creates newsletters, website content, and competition presentations
  • Supports the team financially to purchase materials and resources
