CU Solar Boat
Founded in 2017, Cornell University Solar Boat is a premier project team dedicated to designing and building an innovative, single-occupant, solar-powered boat to compete in the annual Solar Splash competition. This engineering project team unites undergraduates from a diverse range of majors, all committed to advancing sustainable energy systems and efficient design. The Solar Splash competition provides the perfect stage for team members to test and apply classroom knowledge in real-world challenges.
Cornell Solar Boat is divided into five specialized, student-led subteams—each responsible for a unique aspect of the project yet all contributing to a unified goal. The Solar Panel System team focuses on solar panel design, wiring, waterproofing, and charging systems, ensuring the boat’s power source is reliable and resilient. The Hull Team oversees the design and fabrication of the boat’s body, analyzing structural and fluid dynamics to enhance efficiency and performance. Drivetrain & Steering handles the motor housing, drivetrain design, steering systems, and waterproofing to optimize navigation. The Systems Team tackles motor control, data acquisition, communication, safety features, and speed regulation, ensuring smooth operation and functionality. Lastly, the Business Team drives fundraising, manages the budget, and oversees public relations, sharing the team's mission and achievements with the public.
United under a shared vision for sustainability and technological innovation, Cornell Solar Boat fosters a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that encourages students to push the boundaries of engineering design.
$15
Deckhand
This donation pays for one team members lunch during a long day of racing our boat at competition!
$25
Second Mate
This will help cover the cost of one of the tools we will need to build our boat.
$50
First Mate
This contribution covers the cost of our registration in order to compete in the Solar Splash Competition.
$100
Boatswain
This covers the cost of the gas it will take us to transport our boat to competition!
$500
Quartermaster
This contribution covers the cost of the new solar panels we are buying for our new design.
$1,000
Captain
This covers the cost of the foam we use within the hull to make the boat float. Without this, we wouldn't even have a shot at competition.
