Cornell Latino/a/x Student Emergency Fund

The Cornell Latino Alumni Association (CLAA) has launched its 5th annual Holiday Fundraising Campaign!  Join us in leveling the playing field for low income Latino/a/x students at Cornell. We are raising critical funds to directly support the LSSO/LSP Emergency Fund to address a critical need for emergency, stop gap support for Latino/a/x students identified by Cornell's Latino Student Success Office and LSP faculty. Last year, we raised close to $10,000 and helped twenty (20) students receive critical emergency support.

The funds disbursed in 2021 supported:

·         A senior whose apartment flooded and molded due to landlord negligence; the student was able to replace ruined personal possessions and emergency relocation expenses.

·         Several students to replace broken glasses, or buy new supplies of contact lenses so they could stop using expired lenses.

·         Two students to buy bus tickets home when family members fell ill.

·         Several students cover co-pays for therapy or medical bills, prescriptions with very high co-pays, or dental bills because they had no dental insurance.

·         Several students purchase winter coats, clothing and boots.

Students receiving financial aid are often unprepared for surprise emergency medical bills, such as dental and vision, not covered by insurance, or unexpected expenses due to lost clothing, trips home if a relative falls sick, or a broken laptop or other school critical items.  This kind of unplanned financial expense can be relatively minor to the majority of Cornell students, but for those whose families are barely making ends meet, the stress on the student and their disruption with school and their success can be immense. Please help us build this fund and meet our goal!!
