What is Shoals? Shoals is a totally unique, island classroom where students become immersed in marine science and sustainable living; however, our island campus is not yet powered by 100% green technology. The addition of 40 more solar panels will greatly enhance Appledore's existing green grid and allow us to provide clean energy to all classrooms, laboratories and res halls. With your help, we’ll reach this project goal and our students will be able to say: "Shoals is…an adventure, Shoals is…life changing, AND Shoals is...100% green!”
Thanks to our first 24 donors, we have raised enough money to purchase 7 solar panels! Help us reach our goal by sharing our story with your friends and family.
We have a new video to share! Taylor Heaton Crisologo (Cornell class of ’16, and Shoals alum/research intern) tells her life-changing story of living and learning on Appledore Island. Taylor’s story eloquently reminds us of the importance of our “Bringing Energy Conservation to Light at Shoals” crowdfunding project. We are proud to have raised 71% of our goal from 46 supporters—our donor wall is filling fast! Shoals has 10 days to reach the target of $10K for 40 solar panels; we are hopeful that watching Taylor’s video will inspire others to support this cause.
Even though we are approaching the end of this campaign, Shoals staff will continue to prepare for summer 2015 green technology projects and programs. Winter trips to Appledore Island will allow the Shoals crew to check-in on our campus facilities and begin our NSF funded island network upgrade (to include livestreaming web cams!). We will continue to post news of our progress on the Shoals website and on social media—stay tuned!
