As demand for quicker, more sustainable, and more efficient cargo and passenger transportation grows in urban spaces, the envisioned airspace above cities is becoming increasingly congested with delivery drones, air taxis, and other forms of urban air mobility (UAM). This rise in aerial traffic presents a complex challenge that traditional air traffic management systems are ill-equipped to handle. In Project Orion, we aim to develop an autonomous traffic management system that ensures safe, efficient, and scalable operations for drones in urban environments. We are advancing high-fidelity simulation to develop and train next-generation machine learning models for the coordination of aerial vehicles in the crowded airspace of the future. Our multidisciplinary team, including our faculty mentors, has more than 60 years of experience in machine learning, robotics, aerospace, human factors, and hardware. Project Orion started by winning a prestigious grant from NASA, which acknowledges the potential of our solution, team, and vision to support sustainable urban air mobility infrastructures. With your help, we can maximize the impact of our efforts and set the foundation for the future of urban air transport within the coming year.
Project plan and progress
We won the NASA University Student Research grant in Q1 2024. Our project will run for one year in close partnership with NASA, and we plan to have new machine-learning models for urban air mobility traffic management developed, tested through novel methods, and ready for scale by the end of our project duration. We will be updating our project website regularly with our progress and we plan to publish findings, methods, and software solutions through our channels as we work on this project. Since day one, we've been working hard as a team, and have made significant progress in a short time for setting up our development infrastructure. We've completed multiple rounds of designing and testing baseline machine learning models that will set the foundation of our upcoming work.
Invest in our project and partner with us to scale impact!
We believe we are on a path to unlocking the potential of urban air mobility; and with NASA's support, we are ever more confident in our team and solution. But we need you to join us!
In accordance with NASA requirements for our grant, we are seeking additional funding and support from interested industry partners for our project. This support primarily involves monetary contributions to our project's crowdfunding campaign (led by Cornell University in partnership with NASA under a cost-sharing agreement). With additional funds and industry partners, we can scale the impact of our work and make sure we are developing a radical solution for a future we all get excited about.
In addition to independent supporters and public donations to the project, we have designed additional industry-focused donation levels for industry partners. At the basic level, this would involve brand awareness for commercial companies and non-profit organizations interested in supporting our work (Bronze level). By contributing, companies can increase their brand awareness as supporters of this innovative project.
To foster interest and establish mutually beneficial relationships with potential industry partners, we have identified two additional partnership options beyond brand awareness with financial contributions. These options are designed to encourage deeper involvement and collaboration in our research and development efforts especially with industry partners that have aligned missions/interests for integrating solutions or application use cases as part of our R&D efforts (Gold and Diamond levels). We hope you join us in this exciting ride and we want to thank you in advance! We'll make sure the return on your investment will soon be a sky to look up to!
