Our Goals

Cornell’s Formula SAE Team was established in 1987. For the past 38 years, we’ve designed, built, and tested Formula-style racecars. Starting as a small team of a dozen students, we’ve grown our student-run organization to 60 members across nine subteams. As a nine-time World Champion in the combustion era, Cornell Racing is living up to its legacy in the electric vehicle era. Equipped with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive powertrain, last year’s car, ARG24 was our first EV to complete all events, securing us a sixth place finish.

This year’s vehicle, ARG25 is undergoing several significant design improvements over years past. Most notably, this year we will implement an all-wheel drive, in-hub motor system powered through custom two-stage planetary gearboxes. As part of the powertrain changes, we’re also building our first pouch cell battery pack controlled by our first custom BMS. 

On the chassis side, we’re accommodating for the changing powertrain packaging, improving aerodynamics integration, and reducing weight with a brand new monocoque design. For increased tuneability, our suspension system is moving to rockers and adding an adjustable anti-roll bar. 

Needless to say, we’re biting off a lot this year. Our team has made incredible progress in the first few months of school and we’re looking for your help to get us across the finish line! 

Our Teamwork and Experience

The team is formed of 60 students across a variety of majors and backgrounds. We believe that each student offers a unique perspective to the project. Our vehicle is the result of our diverse skill sets and a shared passion for the team. During the semester, members individually spend at least 20 hours weekly designing, building, and tuning the car.

For the month of January, team members forego their winter breaks and return to Ithaca, New York, to manufacture the car and prepare for the upcoming competition in the summer. Additionally, over the summer months, up to a quarter of the team remains on campus to prepare for the following season.

Cornell Racing offers an unrivaled learning experience that allows engineers to take their learnings beyond the lecture hall. Each member has a specific area of ownership: a part of the car for which they are solely responsible. Being the lead engineer of their project encourages students to overcome any technical and collaborative roadblocks. The finished vehicle is a testament to the team’s incredible work ethic and dedication.
